Nomination by Petition

The Petition Process

On May 5, 2008, the Standing Committee will announce the Search/Nominating Committee's nominees for the 15th Bishop of Idaho to be elected at a Special Diocesan Convention on Saturday, June 28, 2008. Other Nominees may also be put forward by Petition during the period May 6, 2008 to 5:00 p.m. May 16, 2008. Full materials and instructions for this process are posted on this website under the "Petition Nomination Forms" heading at the bottom of this page.

The Petition process is essentially a structured process for candidates to be "nominated from the floor" providing enough time to have each nominee go through personal background checks as required by diocesan and the Episcopal Church's election process. Nominations from the floor of the Electing Convention shall not be in order.

Petition candidates are asked to submit the same materials as Search/Nominating Committee candidates plus a petition signed by at least 15 individuals. At least five of the signatures must be canonically resident clergy and the remaining lay signatures must be individuals who are either vestry members, members of a diocesan committee, or delegates to the 2007 Diocesan Convention. Furthermore, signatures must be from individuals at congregations in three of our four deaneries.

The names and biographical information of Petition candidates will be posted on this website as soon as possible after May 16, 2008. They will be invited to participate in the regional "walk-about" visits along with candidates nominated by the Search Committee. This event is scheduled for June 2nd - 6th and details will be announced by the Transition Committee.

The order of names on the ballot at the Electing Convention will be in alphabetical order.

The petition process is under the direction of the Diocesan Standing Committee.
